The 30-day rule for very big purchases

For something that costs weeks of your work, like a new phone, a laptop, furniture or a holiday, a one-day pause isn't enough. Wait 30 days.

When to use it

Use the 30-day rule for anything that costs more than about two weeks of work after tax. For smaller wants, the 24-hour rule is usually enough.

How it works

  1. Write it down with the price, today's date, and the hours of work it costs.
  2. Wait 30 days. Don't browse it, don't watch reviews every day, and turn off the shop's emails.
  3. Use the month. Save towards it, compare prices, and read honest reviews once.
  4. Decide on day 30 with the checklist below.

What usually happens

Often the want fades, and you keep the money. Sometimes it grows, and you buy with confidence and no regret. Either way, you decided, rather than a sale timer or an ad.

When not to wait

Needs aren't wants. If your only laptop breaks and you need it for work, or a repair prevents a bigger cost, don't wait 30 days. Compare a few options for a day or two and buy.
